Why Doesn’t My Alarm Sound When I Test It?

If your smoke alarm isn't sounding when you test it, there are a few things you can check:

  • For smoke detectors, you need to hold the test button for five seconds. Combination alarms (smoke and CO) will respond with a single push.
  • For DC operated alarms, make sure any pull-tabs have been pulled so the battery is activated. Try replacing the battery with a fresh one and ensure the battery contacts are facing the correct direction as instructed in your manual.
  • For AC powered alarms, check that the electrical connector in the back of the unit is securely attached and that the power indicators are lit.

If your alarm still doesn't sound, it might be time to replace it. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years. If the unit is approaching the end of its service life, replace it. You can find a date code stamped on the label attached to the back of the unit.
